Decatur Parks and Recreation Department Announces
2012 Paul Stroud Concerts by the River Schedule
 
Season begins Monday, May 7, 2012 at Rhodes Ferry Park
 
 
Start your week on a great note and make musical Monday nights on the river part of your family’s summer tradition! The City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department invites you to join us for our 2012 Paul Stroud Concerts by the River season. Enjoy great music on the banks of the Tennessee River as beautiful Rhodes Ferry Park provides a stunning setting for this free, weekly concert series. The series begins Monday, May 7 and runs through the last Monday in August. (Note: there will not be a concert on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 or on Monday, July 2.) Concerts by the River features talented performers in a beautiful riverfront setting for an evening of music and fun for all ages. Performances begin at 6:00 PM and usually conclude by 8:00 PM. All concerts are free and guests are welcome to bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the abundance of musical talent found in the Tennessee Valley.
 
The concert series features a broad range of musical styles including Country, R&B, Bluegrass, Southern Rock, Jazz, Classical Music, Big Band,  Classic Rock and more in the 2012 season. Newcomers to the Concerts by the River stage in 2012 include     The U.S. Army Materiel Command Four Star Jazz Orchestra, Crossfire, Down the Road, Bimini Road, Ben Parker Project, Dan Hocter Trio, Kacy Fox and the Two-Timers and Briana Dean. Returning favorites include: Southern Comfort, Decatur Youth Symphony, Austin High School Jazz Band, Sophisticated Swingers, Taylor McLain, Rocket City Jazz Orchestra, Dorothy Cole and Friends, Jeff Whitlow and the Old Barn Band, PapaRox, Madison Community Band, Double Shot, Robert Montgomery and Friends, Slip Jig , Michael Quarry, Red Headed Stepchild, Reginald Jackson and Friends.

On the evening of June 4, a special “Movie in the Park” presentation will follow musical performances by the Rocket City Jazz Orchestra and the U.S. Army Materiel Command Four Star Jazz Orchestra.   The City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department will offer a showing of the movie The Muppets. (2011)
 
The concert series originated in 1991 and now bears the name of the late Paul Stroud, a founding member of the Sophisticated Swingers who encouraged local musical talent and served as the series Coordinator for many years. His legacy lives on through this cherished summer tradition. Special thanks to the many wonderful musical artists who make this evening of family-friendly fun possible! Start the week off right and make Monday nights at the river a summer tradition with family and friends.
