2014 SWAC Softball Championship

For the second straight year, the city of Decatur proudly hosted the Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Championships at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.   The historically African American Conference known as the “SWAC” was founded in 1920 and competes in Division 1 of the NCAA.   The tournament featured eight teams consisting of the top four teams of the SWAC’s Eastern and Western divisions.  This year’s field consisted of Texas Southern University, Mississippi Valley State University, Jackson State University (MS.), Prairie View A&M University (TX.), Alabama State University, Southern University (LA.), Alcorn State University (MS.), and Grambling State University (LA.).

Tournament play kicked off on Wednesday evening May 7th and due to a rainout on Friday, concluded on Sunday morning May 11th with a winner-take-all championship game.  Throughout the week, teams battled through a modified double elimination bracket to reach the finals.  For the second year, ESPN crews arrived in the pre-dawn hours Saturday to set up and produce a live broadcast from Wilson Morgan on Saturday afternoon.  The semifinal game between Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M aired live on ESPN3 and tape delayed on ESPNU at 9 P.M. CST that night.  Texas Southern went on to win that game for the right to face Mississippi Valley State in the finals on Sunday.  Mississippi Valley State had defeated Jackson State University in the other semifinal.

Though Texas Southern came into the championship game holding the best overall record in the conference at 27-18, they faced no easy task.   Their opponents, Mississippi Valley State, had won the championship eight out of the last ten years and were two- time defending champions.  The game was tight, with Texas Southern scoring four late runs to defeat Mississippi Valley State 6-3 and to capture their second conference title.  It was their first since the year 2000.  The win awarded Texas Southern an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they played in the Louisiana – Lafayette Regional.   They fell short in competitive games against #6 seed LA – Lafayette University and Mississippi State, losing each game by only a few runs.
