Gale Montgomery's life work was as a banker and owner of a sporting goods store, but his passion was sports to the extent of organizing the second largest youth baseball organization in the nation, Dixie Youth Baseball. The organization grew to over 300,000 participants under his leadership. He served as national commissioner of the organization for eighteen years at which time his adopted hometown of Decatur, AL, recognized his service in the naming of the Gale Montgomery Park in 1995.
But that only followed the glowing achievement of being inducted into the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame, also in 1995. His passion for youth sports ranged from youth baseball coach, high school basketball referee and public address announcer at Ogle Stadium for both Austin High School and Decatur High School.
