In April of 2008, Elizabeth “Sister” Bell Johnson received a big surprise when city leaders revealed to her a new Northwest park named in her honor. The Elizabeth “Sister” Johnson Park was developed as part of the plan to revitalize Northwest Decatur. Mrs. Johnson was chosen by city leaders due to her being a very influential resident of Northwest Decatur. Council member, Billy Jackson stated that Mrs. Johnson is always working behind the scene, whether it’s getting a sick mother’s children to school, getting people out to vote or helping someone in the neighborhood. Mrs. Johnson is a native of Decatur, Alabama and is very involved in her community. Because of her dedication, loving personality, caring spirit and tireless work the Northwest community affectionately refers to her as “Sister”.
