Alabama Smart Yards

This 12-session course is designed to help homeowners learn practical management options for both the home and the landscape (including gardens), as well as environmentally conscious options that help to maintain our state’s natural resources and biodiversity through the application of both efficient and responsible horticultural techniques. The program will offer tools to help homeowners evaluate and improve the health and safety of their home environments. It will also enable them to save time, energy, money and will include such sessions as:
• Composting
• Maintenance of ornamentals
• Smarter Lawn Care
• Rain Harvesting
• Storm Water & Runoff Management
• Principles of Landscape Design
• Raised Bed Gardening
• Container Gardening in Pots
• Plant Selection & Use
• Protecting Water Quality
• How to Install and Use Drip Irrigation
This course is a “lunch and learn” program, meaning that it will be offered from 12:00 - 1:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Fort Decatur Recreation Center. Course participants will b ring their own lunch and beverage and will learn as they eat! Course participants will be surveyed and will conduct self-evaluations to determine their knowledge gained and their participation or adoption of what they have learned. Upon completion of the course a certificate will be awarded.
The cost is only $10 (total) for all 12 sessions and includes a text as well as a water testing kit. Pre-registration is required. No refunds. Course participants are required to attend all sessions.
Course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning July 7th and ending August 18th.
