Lauren Vermeire, a student at Walter Jackson extended a warm welcome to everyone and then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Don Stanford presented the Arbor Day Proclamation and declared February 22, 2011 as Arbor Day. Students Isabella Harris and Ethan Thomas spoke on the history of Arbor Day and International Events while other students presented flags from other countries concerning Arbor Day. The Combination Show Choir entertained the audience with a rendition of “Yankee Doodle Dandy."
Mayor Stanford then recognized the 2011 Arbor Day Poster Contest winners. First Place went to DANIELLE PARKER of Chestnut Grove Elementary; Second Place Grantland Stone of Leon Sheffield Magnet School; and Third Place Susan Olivia Floyd of Leon Sheffield Magnet School. Honorable mentions went to Chase Williams of Chestnut Grove Elementary School and Zoe Danielle DeGuzman of Frances Nungester Elementary School. Robert Maddox, Alabama Forestry Commission presented Mayor Stanford with the Tree City USA award. This is the eighth year Decatur has received this honor.
