Decatur Youth Symphony Announces Auditions for 2010/11 Session
Decatur Parks and Recreation announce auditions for the Decatur Youth Symphony's
2010-11 season. Directed by Tommy Davis, the DYS meets every Monday evening
beginning on September 13, 2010 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the band room of
Cedar Ridge Middle School.
Admission to DYS is by audition only. Audition
applications should be postmarked by August 16, with auditions taking place by
appointment on August 14th and 29th. There is no fee required to audition,
however there is an activity fee required to participate. Auditions are for
seat positions only. All applicants will be placed in one of our performance
groups. Click on the link above for an application. Applicants for Solaris
Strings do not audition.
DYS accepts applications from young musicians who play
orchestral strings (violin, viola, cello and bass), woodwinds, brass and percussion.
Suggested previous playing experience is a minimum of one year. Students in the
After-School violin program, private lessons, band programs and similar instructional
programs are encouraged to audition.
The Decatur Youth Symphony program now offers four different levels for students
of all abilities:
• The Decatur Youth Symphony is open to students by audition only.
Students that have at least two years of experience playing a string, woodwind,
brass, or percussion instrument are encouraged to audition for this fine ensemble.
The DYS meets at Cedar Ridge Middle School on Monday evenings from 6:00-7:30PM.
The activity fee for the DYS is $50/year.
• The Solaris Strings is open to students who have at least one year of experience
playing a string instrument—violin, viola, cello or bass..
Solaris Strings is a training string orchestra designed to prepare students
for the Decatur Youth Symphony. Technique and reading skills are emphasized.
There is no audition to participate in this ensemble. Solaris Strings meets at
Cedar Ridge Middle School on Monday evenings (beginning Aug 30) from 5:00-5:50PM.
The activity fee for Solaris Strings is $50/year.
The Apollo Strings is a beginning violin class for students that have NO
experience playing a string instrument. Apollo Strings meets at Cedar Ridge
Middle School on Thursdays beginning September2 at 5:00PM.
The Decatur Youth Chamber Orchestra is an ensemble of advanced Decatur Youth
Symphony members.
NOTE – Effective with the2010-11 Season, the Family discount policy has been
eliminated in favor of lower individual fees. Anyone requiring financial

The program is funded by the City of Decatur and private donations.
It is affiliated with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra.
