Decatur, Alabama Named Tree City USA!

Linda Eubanks, Landscape & Beautification Director for Decatur, Alabama announced today that Decatur has been selected by the National Arbor Day Foundation as Tree City USA!

Tree City USA, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 93 million Americans call home.

To qualify for Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards established by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. These standards were established to ensure that every qualifying community would have a viable tree management plan and program. It is important to note that they were also designed so that no community would be excluded because of size.  The four standards are as follows:
  1. A Tree Board or Department
  2. A Tree Care Ordinance
  3. A Community Forestry Program With an Annual  Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita
  4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation

Decatur will be celebrating Arbor Day in a ceremony, Thursday, February 24, 2005 at 2:00 p.m.  The event will be located at Frances Nungester Elementary School (726 Tammy Street - Decatur).  The ceremony will include a brief program including teachers, students, special guests and dignitaries and a tree planting by the students.

101 Beautification Award Nominations to be Judged in May

Department of Landscape and Beautification announced today the number of nominations received this year has already significantly exceeded last year's nominations. That will give Linda Eubanks, the Department Director much more to do, when judges from across North Alabama will gather in Decatur to judge the nominated properties at an undisclosed date and time. By this time last year, Eubanks whose department is responsible for keeping Decatur litter free and full of foliage, received 64 nominations for the annual Beautification Awards. As of April 15, 2005, however, her Department received 101 beautification nomination forms for various types of properties.

12 Judges will tour Decatur, judging each nomination in 5 areas; Landscaping, Litter, Construction, Planting and Maintenance. Following the judging, Judges will relax at the Old State Bank where boxed lunches from Curry's will await them.

Properties with the highest points receive a certificate and large Beautification Award sign to display on their property. The signage has recently been redesigned with the Department of Landscape & Beautification name and Logo. Awards will be presented at a special luncheon Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at the Decatur Country Club. The Landscape and Beautification Department has the responsibility of initiating, coordinating, and implementing programs that will improve the appearance of our community. Our efforts will be in conjunction with citizens, neighborhoods, schools, community-based organizations, and local businesses. Our programs include but are not limited to litter reduction, neighborhood clean-ups, planting and maintenance of city landscape sites, and management of our municipal urban forest.
