Outdoor Camp

 

 
What better way is there to enjoy summer than being in the great outdoors?
 
That’s exactly what the campers did at T.C. Almon Recreation Center. The outdoor camp ran for two weeks. July 9-12 and 16-19. Each day bringing 30 campers, ranging from ages 5 through to 14 years old. The camp focused on introducing the participants to activities that seem to be fading into the background with the world of modern technology and competition becoming so popular.
 
Throughout the week the campers participated in an array of activities. From scavenger hunts in the woods, teaching them about what is around them when they look closely to tent building, a task taken for granted and at times, not as easy as it seems! Even through these two simple activities the counselors and their groups were laying the foundations for life long skills, teamwork and cooperation amongst group members, which can be carried over into other life situations.
 
With the outdoors, comes the unpredictable element of weather. What says you’re a kid having fun better than jumping in puddles? That’s right, these campers never faulted, even when it rained. Embracing the weather they took to using it to their advantage, making slip and slides, water fights and enjoying the sensation of nature’s elements.
 
Special guests, Daphne Moland, from Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, did a spectacular job of educating the campers on various wildlife in our area and giving the opportunity to touch a live snake. Stuart Goldsby, the regional hunter education coordinator, gave the campers the thrill of learning the correct and safe procedures for tree stand safety at the newly opened outdoor archery range. The campers were able to climb the tree stand and be suspended in the air by the safety harness.
 
Archery- a sport that is becoming increasingly popular, had the campers intrigued. Many faces lit up as the adrenalin rose when a bulls eye was made. It was amazing to watch as these kids took to the sport with such enthusiasm and precision!
 
With many more activities, such as trail walking, tailgate games, arts and crafts and swimming, there was so many memories and friendships made. The camp counselors were so involved and enthusiastic with their groups, that there was no time to not have fun! The camp was a huge success and we look forward to being able to expand and incorporate new activities and adventures in outdoor camps held in the future.
