Awards Luncheon

2011
Beautification Awards Luncheon

There is a growing commitment on the part of Decatur property owners and tenants to improve curb appeal using landscaping and anti-litter campaigns. This was made obvious on June 22 when recent judging results were revealed at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The City of Decatur Landscape & Beautification Department announced 82 winners and 24 honorable mentions during the annual luncheon.

Landscape & Beautification Coordinator Linda Eubanks introduced the Rev. Dean Bowers who gave the Invocation, as well as Beautification Board Chairman Jack Moores. In his opening remarks, Mr. Moores talked about the importance of partnerships in accomplishing the goals of beautifying and cleaning up Decatur.

The awards were presented by Mayor Don Stanford and Ms. Eubanks.

Walter Jackson Elementary School was the first place winner in the elementary division of the 2011 Clean Campus. The award was accepted by Principal Rhonda Reece. Second place winner was Eastwood Elementary.

Oak Park Middle School won first place in the secondary division, and Liz Stewart accepted the award on behalf of the school.

All the schools were encouraged to look for partnerships and ways to involve parents, staff members, community leaders, and especially students in ramping up beautification efforts.

Mrs. John Cook, Sr., presented the John Cook, Sr., Steward of Spring Award to First United Methodist Church. Brian Cook, John Cook's grandson, spoke about his grandfather and lessons he learned from him about doing things the right way.

Special thanks to the judges who travelled from Athens, Cullman, Madison and Hartselle: Linda Baggett, Diane Risdon, Dorothy Dixon, Dot Franks, Mae Hagood, Cathy Hales, Ellen Hall, Bob Hawley, Wanda Hightower, Aleshia Hooper, Buchanan Jackson, Melissa Kirkindall, Martha McCracken, Barbara Newman, Judi Owens, Peggy Smith, Faye Walker
