The Benefits of Swimming
Swimming is a wonderful individual or group activity with numerous benefits for the body and mind. Swimming provides a balanced exercise of body muscles accomplished through low impact, low resistance activity in a relaxed environment. Exercise in the water, whether it be swimming or water aerobics, is of great benefit to those with arthritis or other physical challenges who may not have the ability to run or participate in weight lifting.
Swimming is good for exercising the knees, back, arms and legs and can provide strengthening of lung capacity. It helps circulation and increases the blood supply prompting more efficient pumping of the heart. Many athletes cross train with swimming to help build up their endurance.
The American Diabetes Association suggest 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week (over a three-day period), such as swimming, to aid glycemic control. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes each day of moderate-to-intense exercise to help reduce coronary disease and lower blood pressure.
The low impact exercise of swimming is a great way to maintain weight control, tone muscles and even assist with physical therapy needs.
The health benefits of swimming are numerous not only physically, but it is an activity which brings a sense of well being by reducing stress, increasing focus and supporting a better self esteem.
